Day 161

Today we were busy and finished the last part of our special book we've been making just in time for our Art Walk tomorrow night.  You will be able to take these home with you when you come in.

Art Walk

We will be hosting an Art Walk tomorrow evening, Thursday, June 1st for families to come to their child’s classroom and see the art that they created with Jennifer Stables our Artist in Residence. The event will be from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm. This will be a drop-in event that you can show up for at any time between 6:00, when the doors open, and prior to 7:00 when the event ends. We are asking that families enter through their child’s entry doors so that we do not have extra long lineups at the front door.

This is not intended to be parent-teacher interviews and there will be no performances. The entire building will be open to families of current students to walk through to their child(ren)’s classes. Staff will be present in the school and classroom, however, every child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is responsible for their supervision.

We will be selling popcorn throughout the evening for $1 per bag in the school’s common area and there will be food trucks in front of the school from 5:00 to 8:00 for families interested in purchasing food or drinks.

A reminder that the parking lot is for staff only and we ask families to walk or ride their bikes that night as parking around the school will be limited.

Sports Day

Our annual Sports Day activities will be held on the morning of Friday, June 2nd. It is important that all students wear loose, flexible clothing appropriate for the weather conditions of the particular day. Running shoes are required footwear. Sunscreen lotion and hats are also encouraged and should be applied at home before coming to school. The forecast calls for rain on Thursday and sunshine on Friday so the mosquitoes will likely be out on our school field. Students may wish to use bug spray or wear long sleeves.  Only rain, snow or poor air quality will cause us to postpone the event. A messenger was sent home last Friday looking for volunteers with a current volunteer clearance that would be available to help out on this fun activity, based morning, if you are able to help out please contact the office at 403-817-3516 or email at newbrighton@cbe.ab.ca .

Students will arrive at their normal time and report to their classes, as usual, AM kindergarten students are welcome to attend even though it is a PM scheduled day. We will follow our usual start and end times for Fridays.  Our Parent Council is graciously providing each student with a frozen freezie treat at the end of the day, if you would prefer that your child not receive a freezie please let your child’s classroom teacher know, or contact the school office.

Dau 160

IT IS HOT.  in our room.  Please make sure to have a water bottle with your child.  By the afternoon, even with half the lights off, two fans going and my fancy tinfoil windows our room still reached a tropical 27 degrees.  I let the kids have water on their desks to stay hydrated.

Today we finished our last writing page for our special book.  We have one last art project to do and then it should be ready for Thursday night's Art Walk.  You will be able to take home our fancy bowls and your child's book that they have been working hard on all year.

This Thursday is Orange Shirt Day, Thursday night is the Art Walk, and Friday ALL Kinders are invited for Sports Day.  Our most recent PowerSchool marks should be up and running shortly.  This will give you a good idea of where your child is at going into the end of the year and report cards. If you have any questions please send me an email.

Day 156

Sorry, I haven't posted in a while.  Between the heat and the smoke, I wasn't feeling well by the end of the day last week and had to leave.  Today our morning crew had a chance to drum with Ms Lysak which was super exciting.  In the afternoon we went outside and had library with Mrs Hughes class.

Today was busy, Busy, BUSY!  In the morning we joined Ms. Bell's class in grade two for an acknowledgment of the land in the morning.  We then made habitats for our praying mantis'.  We came back inside to do one large drawing of a praying mantis.

In the afternoon we made our flowers for our garden in the hallway and had a chance to watch the Grade 2-4 performance of The Wizard of Oz!

Day 149

Today we had a busy yet calm day.  We finished putting our TOP SECRET packages together and we sent them home.  Please remember this TOP SECRET activity was broken up into the entire week.  If your child missed a day this week they will be missing that section of the TOP SECRET package.

This morning we had a wonderful concert by the Calgary Youth Singers.  Later in the morning, we had a practice lockdown.  The AM Kinder friends did an amazing job all morning.  In the afternoon we worked on some artwork for the Volunteer Tea.

Day 147

Today was all TOP SECRET!   They turned out super cute but that is all I am going to say. :)

Day 146

Today we wrote about the 6th sacred teaching of LOVE.  We know that there is no one we love more than our family so we wrote about what our favourite thing to do with our family is.  As you can see, there has been so much improvement in my Kinder Friends writing.  There are finger spaces, multiple sounds in the words and periods at the end of the sentence.  In most cases, I could amaze the kids by reading their work without their support.  I told them that once I can read their writing that means they are true writers!

This week we are also working on something TOP SECRET so there may not be many pictures this week.  We started with the first part of our TOP SECRET assignment.

Day 145

Today we celebrated May the Fourth by doing a guided drawing in our visual journals.  They turned out super cute.

We also continued with our pattern sentences practice.

Day 144

Today we celebrated Mrs. Hughes birthday!!!  Her classroom had 40 balloons and streamers everywhere!  Our classroom looked pretty dull compared to hers. haha

Today was also Hats on for Mental Health.  We made a guided drawing of ourselves wearing a hat.  I am incredibly impressed with how well we are doing with our drawing.  It also means that my Kinder friends are almost ready to leave me to go to grade one. :(

Today when we came into class we wrote the pattern sentence, 'I eat...'

Someone gave us a used New Brighton youth-size small shirt.  The first person to email me can have it.

Day 143

Today was Orange Shirt Day and we welcomed our new teaching of LOVE.  This morning we had an amazing assembly led by the grade ones.  When we first came into the classroom we wrote pattern sentences again.  Today was 10 TIMES better than yesterday.  I know that each and every day we will get better and better.  As more students are becoming independent writers it is freeing up more time for me to work with some friends that are still working on the concept.  I can tell you that no matter what level of a writer your child is at I can already see a HUGE difference.  I am very proud of each and every one of them.  Here are some more samples of our pattern sentences.

We also finished colouring our wolves from yesterday.

During Center Time I promised the kids I wouldn't call any of them over to work with me to give them a chance to play with their friends.  This gave me time to put up the cute pictures from last week.

Yesterday I sent home an assessment.  If you have any questions regarding the assessment please feel free to talk to me. I can assure you that anything highlighted in yellow is being worked on often and already I have seen huge improvements. :)

Tomorrow is HATS ON FOR MENTAL HEALTH.  Please wear a hat.  I also wanted to let you know that with the warmer temperature our classroom has a more tropical feel to it.  Please remember to send a water bottle to school with your child, especially in the afternoon.
