Day 10

Last night you received an email from New Brighton school, I quickly noticed that most students in the morning came to school today with knowledge of the email and had many questions.  I decided to take the approach of what is a hero.  This goes with feelings that many of the kids would have had from the email, our lockdown practice and the Terry Fox Run all in one day.  We read the story, A Hero Like You we discussed that a hero is someone who is here to help us, keep us safe, and save the day. We especially talked about how Police Officers are heroes that are here to protect us.  In the morning, we had a community circle around heroes but most of it was about children talking about their feelings from last night and how happy they were to see all their friends at school today. In the afternoon we did not have a community circle and we did not really talk too much about the police officers in the area yesterday as it wasn't as valid to this crew. 

BOTH the AM and PM had a practice LockDown.  For the AM Crew, we did a walk-through where we went over what it would look like, sound like and feel like before the entire school had the actual practice.  The AM class was very quiet as we played hide and seek as quietly as we could sitting crisscross apple sauce in the corner of the classroom waiting for someone safe to open the door and find us.  We were so quiet that we surprised the police officer that we were actually in the classroom.  The PM Crew did it a little differently because we did a walk-through before doing our actual practice but the alarm was just my voice so they didn't hear the loudspeaker AND we waited for our principal Mr. Murphy to come to find us.  He was proud of how quiet we were and as a class, we discussed that our tummy may have got a little tickly but we did some breathing exercises with our hands to help us.

After the lockdown in the morning, our grade 5 buddies came and joined us for our Terry Fox Run.  If you sent me a name to put on your child's tag that is special for you and your family I would have sent you a picture please look for it in your email. After the lockdown in the afternoon, we went outside for recess.
